How We Grew In 2023: StormGeo Shipping Product Updates

Taking a look back at 2023, it has been a year filled with growth for the StormGeo community. As we rush into leading innovation in maritime technology for 2024, let’s reflect on our 2023 milestones and sneak a peek at what is coming in the new year. 

Where StormGeo focused on innovation in 2023: 

• We enabled our customers to escalate their decarbonization strategy, with both compliance and profitability in mind.
• We made data validation and sharing even more streamlined to enhance decision-making across multiple stakeholders. 
• We invested in empowering our customers to shape the future of our growth by embedding their feedback in our development roadmap.

More data-driven decarbonization strategies 

While the shipping industry in 2023 was navigating decarbonization through new regulations and a sense of uncertainty, we focused on making shipping professionals feel more confident in a volatile landscape. For that reason, we prioritized combining our people’s expertise with technology to deliver solutions that go beyond AI and put the human factor at the core of our product. The result of it? A complete suite built by Regulations, Technology, and Shipping experts to help shipping companies develop, implement, and optimize their environmental strategy based on accurate data and actionable insights. 

EU ETS Solution – Automatically generates the CO2 emissions subject to EU ETS based on MRV reporting. It helps users to determine the EU allowances needed and supports collaboration with stakeholders in line with commercial and legal requirements. 

CII Simulator - Simulate the commercial impact of CII for different scenarios and collaborate on the ship’s operational deployment to stay compliant achieving decarbonization goals.  

CII Dashboard - Monitor the attained CII in relation to the required CII and its corresponding rating. Monitor the annual CII progression and determine the year of deterioration.  

CII Leg Summary - Assess the CII performance on specific legs or exclude events, e.g. off-hire from the CII calculation. A detailed export contains an event-by-event CII calculation considering all exclusions and corrections. 

Carbon Footprint Dashboard – Track your fleet’s carbon footprint, compare it to regulatory or custom targets, and assess emission reduction through alternative fuels or by combining with StormGeo’s route advisory service.

Transforming manual workflows to increase efficiency

Since we started 25 years ago, part of our mission has been to inspire traditional industries to drive their growth into sustainability by taking advantage of technology and digitalization. Staying loyal to that goal, we invested in enabling our customers to shift from manual to automated workflows in areas that are dominated by spreadsheets, hand notes, and asynchronous communication.  
 
Bunker Management, our new building block added to s-Suite, fuses bunker planning, procurement, and market intelligence to equip bunker professionals with the right tools and data to inform their decision-making and cut down on costs. In an industry where stakeholders heavily rely on manual processes to make decisions, Bunker Management uses AI to generate the most efficient bunker plans and enables users to manage inquiries in a fast and transparent way. 
 
Similarly, by introducing Electronic Logbooks, we enable better ship-to-shore collaboration when it comes to voyage reporting. As environmental and safety regulations make data accuracy critical to efficiency, Electronic Logbooks ensure flexible and error-free reporting.  
 
Bunker Management – Optimize bunker planning and procurement with increased transparency throughout the bunker management process while achieving cost reductions.

Improving efficiency in voyage planning

Like any other multi-step process, voyage planning is a complex and resourceful process. From crew safety and fuel costs to vessel performance and route optimization, driving efficiency in the open seas requires real-time weather and ocean intelligence to support decision-making.

As we understand the challenges of voyage planning in a weather-sensitive environment, we continuously invest in developing our Planning & Navigation solutions to meet the evolving needs of the shipping industry. In 2023, we shed light on the cost side by rolling out the Voyage Calculator, enabling voyage planners to predict voyage costs for different routes based on several factors.

In addition to Voyage Calculator, s-Planner has been transformed into our primary Route Planning tool that streamlines the passage planning workflow by generating route alternatives by integrating weather intelligence, navigational charts and route optimization parameters. 

Voyage Calculator - Estimate voyage costs utilizing optimized routes based on proprietary speed loss data and climatological weather analysis.

s-Planner - Optimize Route Planning by combining electronic charts, publications, weather insights and smart voyage optimization algorithms in a single platform.

Where we’re focusing in 2024: 

• Providing more flexibility: developing solutions that address a wide range of needs and can be utilized by different stakeholders in the shipping value chain.
• Improving user experience: increasing usability of our solutions to reduce time-to-value, while making our customers feel more confident while they are interacting with our platform. 
• Boosting scalability: enhancing our existing solutions so that they are continuously adapting to the needs of the shipping industry in the future.
